Packaged for convenience?

Buried berries

It seems as if strawberries have arrived on the local Austin scene in great quantities this week. When I lived a short hop from the California strawberry fieldsĀ in Salinas, I appreciated the convenience of hand-picking on market days. Picking your own strawberries may not add up to total convenience, but there’s a convenience to selecting your own fruit. You don’t end up with a layer of berrries on the bottom of a package — some that are either not ready or beyond their prime. Have you ever noticedĀ the irony of packaged products that tout convenience for the consumer? Pre-packaged berries (and other fruits – how about dated clementines that find a place among shiny beauties?) offer plenty of convenience — but not necessarily for consumers alone.
