Let them break bread

Must we compare lunch box meals with the Obama children? The trail back to preschool basics is within reach for all of us: make good choices.  Let them break bread in peace. In today’s Washington Post

Father-Son Cake Bake gets underway

The chatter around the breakfast table today centered on the upcoming Cub Scouts Father-Son Cake Bake. To be celebrated with our Pack March 26, this event brings Scouts together with Dad or Grandpa or Uncle Mario to bake a cake–no enhancement of store-bought cakes allowed.  This is a fun Cub baking project that generates great ideas in […]

Rice expert dismisses rice cooker

It has been brought to my immediate attention that my rice cooker stinks! I resist full disclosure because this little tool has served me for many years. But my local rice expert, who wouldn’t think of preparing rice longer than 15 minutes for evenly cooked rice, cannot believe that I’ve sacrificed time and perfection with […]

Statesman Food Matters

The Cookery warms up . . . in today’s news with the Austin American-Statesman’s Addie Broyles. Addie shares my recipe for Simple Soup Supper in Try This At Home. Feed and read with Addie around her print and electronic tables.

Try to make a wish with a turkey nugget

How many wishes can you make with one wishbone? (Not a synthetic wishbone–but one that you carefully carved around.) This wishbone came from the turkey we roasted in December. Composting pledge

Inspired last spring by the kids from The Cookery, we started worm composting. Our blog post on worm condo composting was one of our top posts of 2008. We’re attempting to enhance the operation in 2009. Got food scraps? This composting method is low maintenance. http://cookerycontent.wordpress.com/2008/04/29/worm-condo-composting/

DIY Sink Upgrade

Sink upgrade: complete.  Everything works.  We’ve found no leaks (yet), and we’re celebrating this kitchen upgrade in DIY fashion – cooking at home this evening.

Not Sunk Yet

With projects around this cookery, the situation occasionally gets worse before it gets better. But we’re not sunk yet. After the fourth trip to the hardware store, we’ve purchased the final parts to finish our upgrade.

Out with the old . . .

kitchen sink. Have you ever tried to squeeze a size 8 foot into a size 6 1/2 shoe . . . to see if maybe the shoe might fit? Our bright, open kitchen with the perfectly-placed island provides great space for the cooking process. But we’ve been struggling to clean pots, pans, and oversized cutting boards […]

Austin priceline: Hass avocados

Keep it affordable, and dress up your menu with a little help from HEB. At two for $1, Hass avocados may make the cut in your food shopping budget. Likely imported from Mexico this time of year, the Hass green fruit will enhance my tortilla soup later this week.
