As if you didn’t know . . . potlucks please the palate

Establish time, date, place. Add generous mix of people who sustain various corners of food community. Embellish with potluck selections to create an amazing dish array. That’s how it came together Sunday in Austin. If you were among the participants and guests at this potluck at Penny’s, may we concur that the meal was paradise on a plate? Regrets that The Cookery doesn’t have […]

You’ve got mail-surprise on the doorstep

Want to surprise a friend? Why wait for a birthday? The Cookery loves the new skewers that arrived on our door step yesterday. Selected at the market in Morocco by Middle Eastern explorer Ms. Carrie, the skewers have found a welcome home. Beautiful! Kebabs anyone?

Second-hand cookbooks measure up

Second-hand cookbooks Second-hand cookbooks measure up if you give them a chance. The Cookery extends a grateful thanks across Austin to a book treasure hunter, our friend Jane, for the latest acquisition for our collection. Middle Eastern, vegetarian, French or light and easy, we’ve learned not to snub our noses at used cookbooks. Looking to pick up a […]

Bakers Ready

Feeding the masses? Preheating required. We received these bakers washed and wrapped to help prepare a meal for a large group. We fired up The Cookery’s oven for this hot potato project. 25 potatoes. 350 degrees. 90 minutes. Done.

Counting calories

Are you feeling a little puffy? There’s probably a reason. If you’ve been indulging in everything sweet throughout February, it may be time to count down to a leaner lunch. I’ll be doing a double-take of what’s on my plate for the next few weeks.

Oscar menu? Spice it up with Monica Bhide

With India in mind, taste a sample of Modern Spice: Inspired Indian Flavors of the Contemporary Kitchen  . . . by Monica Bhide. Here’s Monica’s recipe for Butternut Squash, Coconut and Lamb Stew If you haven’t seen the film or heard […]

Double Play Dinner

Winter may be lingering around your neighborhood, but here in Texas, we’re welcoming pre-season baseball. It’s convenient to skip a healthy dinner with a load  of excuses, primarily that there’s little time to fix anything when returning home after 8:00 p.m. from the batting cages. We rallied last night with a successful double play – arriving on time […]

Love on the griddle

If we prepared French Toast often, this breakfast fest wouldn’t be a treat. From whole wheat bread to real maple syrup, help the kids in the kitchen put a heart-healthy spin on French Toast. If you’re due for some authentic French romance, visit The French Fork for a lesson on making and enjoying crepes.

Griddle Time

What’s up with the griddle? If the secret to a happy marriage is a waffle maker, then part of the fun in learning to cook with the kids is griddle time. If you’re stashing one in your cabinet, or storing your griddle in the garage with the camping gear, dust it off and add butter. With our large slab of iron in action this week, […]

All steamed up over Fuzzy Logic

The Cookery’s been conducting market research on rice cookers with a 5-cup minimum. The Panasonic Fuzzy Logic rice cookers lead the pack among products in this search. Our about-to-be-retired rice cooker is not equipped with Fuzzy Logic technology. The Cookery’s managed well without it this long, but when we uprade the in-house rice cooker, it looks as if we’ll adopt a […]
