Fattoush

I’m rounding up the ingredients to prepare fattoush and hoping to find just the right produce to toss into this beautiful salad. Fattoush is light and colorful with the perfect crunch to stand alone as a meal.

Popcorn, pretzels and pickle pops

Forget leafy greens and fresh fruit. The only thing going green at this ballpark is the “light green” pickle pop. Baseball fans can count on their favorite concession treats at Oak Hill. Check out the featured menu of popcorn and pop flies in the Oak Hill Gazette.

Boost protein on a budget with bean bargains

Looking for a diversion from your usual protein boost? Try a white bean, chicken and sausage cassoulet. White beans remain a reliable dollar stretcher. You decide how much chicken and sausage to spring for to round out this dish. The Cookery tested this version of white bean, chicken and sausage cassoulet from RecipeZaar. It pleases with […]

Every Day Earth Day

How are we stacking up with the green generation? On this Earth Day, I took my lunch break in the school cafeteria. Myself included, those of us preparing lunch for the not yet independent crowd aren’t quite there yet.  Not so favorable . . . I didn’t see much “natural” food spilling from lunch trays and lunch […]

Can this flan be saved?

Hits and misses . . . there’s no mistaking this sure miss. Can this flan be saved? For presentation’s sake, little hope rests in recovering the flan.  Can it still be eaten? Around here, of course. Part of it has already been enjoyed at the time of this posting. Looks really aren’t everything.  The flan still delivers, despite disappointment.

Walk the talk

These tangerine beauties won’t have their chance at working circles around any kitchen island. But they do inspire. Thanks, Carrie, for sharing these hot slippers. Slip into this pair of beaded mules and watch Laila walk the culinary talk at Laila Blogs. Don’t miss Laila’s recipe for samosas.

As if you didn’t know . . . potlucks please the palate

Establish time, date, place. Add generous mix of people who sustain various corners of food community. Embellish with potluck selections to create an amazing dish array. That’s how it came together Sunday in Austin. If you were among the participants and guests at this potluck at Penny’s, may we concur that the meal was paradise on a plate? Regrets that The Cookery doesn’t have […]

Managing risk . . . food allergies and EpiPens

Some people simply can’t go out and about without toting a purse, bag or backpack – not for lip gloss, your lunch, phone or even your ATM card. If you care for a loved one with food allergies, you’re packing that EpiPen. Snub fashion and wear your emergency bag if you need to stay hands-free. I’m forever […]

Eat your pasta

This dish may look like pasta, but it smells like pastry. Look again. This bowl of cake took honors in the Cub Scout Father-Son Cake Bake “wackiest” category. Pasta Dad works in the restaurant business, and it appears as if he gathered a little inspiration at the office. Please pass the pasta!

Icing on the cake marks true secret of Father-Son Cake Bake

The Father-Son Cake Bake Team wiped down the counters and swept up the sugar just in time to enter their cakes in the Pack 61 Cub Scout Father-Son Cake Bake. Designed as a fundraiser, this year’s cakes were judged by two gracious Whole Foods cake decorators who didn’t actually taste the cakes, but judged them on their appearance, […]
