Cookery closed for the day

We’re moving it all outdoors today.  This indoor cookery is closing for the day and we’ll be keeping it light and easy with a picnic basket. Any sunny sandwich ideas?

Thrifty Thursday in the Cookery

The mood around the cookery feels like Thrifty Thursday. I’m anchoring this evening’s meal with Wild Alaska Sockeye salmon from Trader Joe’s. At $6.67, I’ve spent the bulk of my $10 budget for four people tonight.  On hand, fresh dill weed, penne, grape tomatoes and spinach. Done. Leftover watermelon slices (if the afternoon snackers don’t get to them first) […]

Whisk Time

Michael Graves whisk . . . meet Michael Graves timer. Though one was designed for Target and one for Alessi, there’s no denying a connection between these two cousins. New meets almost-vintage in these utility essentials.

Lovin’ my oven

My oven has been working overtime.  I mailed another sweet surprise today.  This one went out with many wishes for a quick recovery.

Wrapped to perfection

This little gift arrived with some of our brunch guests.  I hated to open it, it was wrapped so beautifully.  As Keats wrote, “A thing of beauty is like a joy forever.”

Small price to pay

We don’t mind paying the price of a little extra prep and clean-up. Brunch has emerged as one of our favorite meal shares. I further tested my Beijing Chicken for this gathering and it handily won praises.  Not only is this one hot brunch dish served over a bed of lettuce, it really rates well over a bed of […]

Browsing the shelves at the Craig Claiborne Book Store

Occasionally . . . it’s essential to make time for food adventures.  Last week, I joined two friends for a visit to the Culinary Institute of America.  If you appreciate the world of food and you’re within shouting distance, this is one destination you shouldn’t miss.  In addition to enjoying our “dining out,” the trip resulted in a […]

Dressing the Greens

A request just came in for this recipe.  Here’s the vinaigrette dressing that lightly enhances the greens. Vinaigrette Dressing   2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 ½  teaspoons balsamic vinegar ½ tablespoon chopped fresh basil ¼ teaspoon sugar   Whisk ingredients together and toss with your favorite greens.  Serve immediately.

Kids in the Kitchen

If you love sweet summer Michigan corn, look the other way.  But if you don’t mind petite spring ears, let the kids help with corn shucking.  Little hands love to help around this cookery.

Sweet treats for Moms in May

Here’s a sweet treat for moms and those who may be thinking of your mothers during this month of May.  You’re all invited to drop by to sample these nuggets of love, laughter and wise counsel.  Check out Mothering Heights to share in the buffet of sweets that Christine Fugate has inspired with the “The 2nd Annual Mothering […]
